First Look: Inside Verizon's 5G VR Live-Stream of the Pro Bowl

Verizon made history at the Pro Bowl, the annual all-star football game that took place in Miami this year.

The telecom used a pair of Insta360 Pro 2 cameras and 5G technology to pull off the world's first 8K live-stitched, live broadcast of an NFL game. The feed was integrated into ESPN's live broadcast and projected into a dome 200 miles away in Miami, giving local fans an immersive, real-time experience of the game.

Radiant Images, our longtime friends and partners, worked with Flight School Studio to help make Verizon's broadcast possible. We recently had a chance to sit down with Radiant Images co-founder Michael Mansouri to get his insights on what went into planning and executing the shoot. We'll be sharing his experience, as well as a detailed breakdown of the workflow his team helped innovate for the project, right here at the blog in the coming weeks.

Pioneering uses of VR broadcasting in sports such as Verizon's have taken on new meaning amidst the COVID-19 pandemic and yesterday's suspension of the NBA season. As exhibitions, business trips, and sporting events are hampered by the virus, some companies have already begun to experiment with VR's potential to fill the gap.
